We are aiming to open our own building encompassing a cafe, supported employment, benefits advice, courses and workshops for disabled adults
by Heidi Smith in Peterlee, England, United Kingdom
Who are we, and what is our project about?
Learning Abilities CIC supports adults with disabilities to live long, healthy and fulfilling lives through a variety of projects:
Employment: We break down barriers to employment using the support employment model, increasing opportunities to meaningful and long lasting employment.
Social skills: We offer social groups and events breaking down social isolation and improving mental wellbeing
Independant living skills: Through our cafe we teach our adults to cook, do basic housekeeping as well as employability skills working with money and serving customers
Pre employability skills, confidence and social skills: We offer courses improving all of the above that is based on fun and games, not just another employment course!
Health accessibility: Having this building will allow us to begin a project breaking down barriers to health services.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We have a fantastic opportunity to house everything we are doing under one roof. We have funding for our cafe, staff in place and plenty going on but to be able to pull it all together will allow us to offer more to our adults as well as integrate into programs with the local community.
How we’ll spend the money raised
The building we are interested in needs capital renovations to ensure it is safe and multifunctional as well as completely accessible for everyone.
We need to install two new doors, replace flooring throughout with non slip and washable flooring as well as adding in storage space to accomate the community groups that already use the building. We are wanting to cater to all ages, groups and be a happy space for everyone
