Laudonia is a professional, recently formed early music ensemble based in Scotland, co-founded by soprano Susan Hamilton. She is joined by some of Europe’s leading exponents in the world of baroque music bringing you an exciting programme inspired by Sir John Clerk of Penicuik’s Grand Tour in the 1690s. Following his route through Europe, we have devised an exciting and eclectic programme for soprano, trumpet, strings and bass continuo, based around the music he may have heard on his travels and written by composers he met, some of whom he studied with on his journey. This includes Clerk’s emotional cantata - Leo Scotiae Irritatus, Corelli’s passionate violin sonata in D minor - La Follia and the ethereal concerto for voice, trumpet and strings by Rosenmüller - O Felicissimus Paradysi.
Sir John, who is perhaps better known for his legal and political contributions to Scottish life, was also a significant composer in his own right. As a result of the fire that broke out in Penicuik House (1899) we may never know the full extent of his musical output. Thankfully his five vocal cantatas survived.
Why do we need your help?
In order to release our first recording of this magnificent repertoire we need to raise a further £14,000. We are asking you to be our modern-day patrons - just as artists in the 17th Century required funding and support from patrons. This recording is important in order to raise the profile of the ensemble and help us to be recognised by festival directors and promoters. Should we raise more than our target, this will help to fund our future projects. Giving concerts and producing recordings is the main output of the ensemble. We are equally committed to developing educational and outreach programmes in Scotland and beyond. Working in partnership with schools, conservatoires and promoters the ensemble will create projects both didactic and stimulating, enabling young people and new audiences to experience, learn from and be inspired by live music again.
