Laszlo Balla is fundraising for
The People's Recovery Project
Charity No. 1199225

£350
Hi Everyone,
I'm Laszlo, and I will run my first ever half marathon on May 18th to raise funds for The People’s Recovery Project, which is an amazing charity that seeks to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people experiencing homelessness and addiction, in the most innovative ways. The work of the charity is co-designed and co-delivered by community members with lived experience, which makes it very special and successful.
The stark facts:
- In 2023 over 1400 people died while experiencing homelessness and over one third of these deaths were related to drugs and alcohol.
- Over two thirds of people who are experiencing homelessness have a drug or alcohol support need.
- In recent years there has been an annual increase in the number of people who are dying due to drug related causes in the United Kingdom
The People's Recovery Project
Drug related deaths in the UK are increasing and opportunities to access recovery are extremely limited for people living on the streets. However, when people are given the opportunity to access residential detox and rehab the results can be transformative for the individual concerned.
The People’s Recovery Project is inspired by real journeys made by individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction through treatment and into recovery. These examples are currently the exception and through shared purpose our community is seeking to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people in this situation.
The People’s Recovery Project is building a compassionate, community-driven approach that helps people access life-saving treatment, supports their recovery journey, and empowers them to break free from reliance on crisis services — benefiting not only the individuals receiving support but also the wider community.
Why support The People's Recovery Project?
Having worked in the homelessness sector for a small charity myself, I know from first hand experience that these charities needs donations the most. Also, if you consider the impact of your support or "value for money", small charities like The People's Recover Project have low overhead costs, so your donation will directly benefit someone in need.
What I love about the project is that they put people with lived experience at the centre of their work: they are part of delivery and design. This isn't only the way ahead if you want to deliver successful and efficient support services, but equally empowers those who once had issues with substances themselves. I believe The People's Recovery Project is very unique in this sense, and shows an example of what recovery services should look like.
There is no pressure to give, but every little will help and add up!
