Community poetry events for young people in Lambeth to celebrate Poetic Unity's 10th birthday

by Ryan Matthews-Robinson in London, Greater London, United Kingdom

Hi! Thank you for looking into our fundraising campaign, we really appreciate all your support - if you are unable to donate, please share - it will help us more than you may think!

Who are we?
Poetic Unity is a Black-led charity that provides spaces for learning, expression and joy through poetry. Based in Brixton, we offer a service by the community, for the community, predominantly supporting young people of Black and mixed-Black heritage, aged 10-30 years old.

We have worked in schools, communities and prisons with children and young people to help them feel seen, heard and understood. We use poetry to help young people express themselves and learn about their identity, support their mental health and to experience healing and joy.

What will your donation support us to do?
In February 2025, Poetic Unity turns 10 years old! We are asking for your support to run a series of inclusive, community events across 10 days of celebrations - your donation will help us to make these activities accessible to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

 Our celebrations include:

  • A large poetry event at Theatre Peckham, expecting over 200 attendees, with performances from award-winning poets and authors, George The Poet and Yomi Sode alongside incredible, talented local young poets
  • A Writing and Wellbeing Retreat facilitated by Poetic Unity founder, Ryan Matthews-Robinson, and wellbeing practitioner Naylou Holistics
  • The creation of an exclusive Poetic Unity 10-year poem performed live at Brixton House and recorded for later release
  • Billboard marketing around Lambeth, celebrating 10 years and encouraging continued support and engagement
  • Themed community events, including Poet’s Corner (regular staple poetry night in Brixton) and Poetry in Motion (engaging in physical fitness through poetry).

To find out more about our work or contact us directly, please visit our website or find us on Instagram and Youtube.

All these events will engage over 600 young people and cost us £20,000 to run - we are seeking funds from other sponsors, grant funders and corporate partners to support, but with only under 2 months to go, we would be so grateful for your support!

Thank you!
