Kingsbury PTFA Fundraising for Sensory Garden to Support Pupils with Autism and Complex Needs
The Kingsbury Parent Teacher Friends Association (PTFA) have created a vital fundraising initiative to create a sensory garden tailored to the needs of pupils with Autism and complex needs. This garden will be a dedicated outdoor space designed to offer a calming, stimulating, and inclusive environment, ensuring that all children can benefit from sensory-rich experiences that support their wellbeing and development.
A Space with Purpose
Sensory gardens are carefully designed environments that engage the five senses through a combination of plants, textures, sounds, and interactive elements. For children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other complex needs, these spaces provide far more than aesthetic appeal — they are therapeutic, educational, and emotionally supportive.
The planned sensory garden at Kingsbury aims to:
- Provide a calming retreat during times of sensory overload or emotional distress.
- Encourage sensory exploration, helping children become more comfortable with different textures, sounds, smells, and sights in a non-threatening environment.
- Promote communication and interaction, offering opportunities for social learning in a relaxed setting.
- Enhance motor skills and cognitive development through interactive elements like water features, musical instruments, tactile panels, and sensory pathways.
- Support emotional regulation, giving children tools and space to manage anxiety and overstimulation.
