To carry on holding cookery classes for children and adults to ensure people can feed themselves and their families
by Silver Road Community Centre Food Bank in Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom
In the past 8 years, we’ve held events such as; Bollywood nights, birthday parties, jumble sales, Christmas fayres, Easter fayres, wellbeing fayres and so much more.
As well as, having permanent groups that hire the hall. These include; Zumba, Zumba Gold, Stay and Play, Sewell Toy Library, Yoga, Accra Yoga, Choir and Dancing Lessons.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, our Community Centre ran sessions, three times a week, making packed lunches for the local school children and their families. During a period of 18 months, we made 10,000 sandwiches, with the help of our many wonderful volunteers.
Due to the hardship of many families in need, within the NR3 area, we decided to open up a food bank and community fridge.
Our food bank is rapidly growing week by week, ever since it opened in late 2020. Due to Covid-19, we started running sandwich making sessions to provide food for local school children and their families. This is when Silver Road Community Centre and their volunteers realised the desperate need for a food bank within the NR3 area.
We are open every Thursday from 10:30 am to 12:15 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 12:15 pm. We provide food and other items to those in need, within our community. Such as, tinned cans, pasta, laundry detergent, toiletries and many more products.
We are an independent food bank, run by volunteers. We hope to help the community and give the residents somewhere to go, when in need.
The cookery lessons for children have become really well attended and due to the popularity of this scheme need more funding to provide more. We have already reached 70 young people and more are interested in attending. We currently have 24 children taking part weekly and need to divide the group into two to make this more practical to deliver. The popularity of these sessions also means that we need more utensils - Even though we have received donations we need more bowls and baking tins
The picture above is from our cookery classes for adults - Here we cook and budget especially using low cost ingredients to help them to create nutritious and exciting alternative meals. We currently have 12 people attending regularly but again we are in need of more utensils to enable us to reach more people.
