1Kairos Housing provides short-term shared accommodation and specialist 1:1 support for asylum seekers and refugees who have become destitute and homeless in Blackburn with Darwen after receiving a decision (positive or negative) on their asylum claim. The individuals we house have faced persecution in their home country for reasons of race; religion; nationality; political opinion; or membership of a particular social group. We provide safe and secure, supported housing. We also provide a small weekly support payment and other support of donations in kind towards essential living supplies.
Kairos Housing brings together the experience of a varied and multidisciplinary team of individuals from across Blackburn with Darwen. Together we bring a broad range of skills and have worked within the asylum and refugee sector cumulatively for around 30 years. This has included delivering casework, supporting individuals at appeal hearings in court, volunteer recruitment, and delivering English Language provision. We began in January 2021 and received our charitable status in May.
Our accommodation is offered on a short-term basis (usually up to one year). Whilst housed with us, our guests will have a support worker who will signpost them to services including support to register with a GP, signposting to casework and local social drop-ins and English Language learning provision. We also keep the asylum seekers we house on track with their legal case as we know this is their route out of destitution.
We are a ‘Warm and Welcome Hub’ and hold a weekly social ‘drop-in’ for our guests, their friends and members of the local community. This is a space where individuals come for community, friendship and support. We also regularly welcome in other local agencies who can offer their services to our guests.
Through our work we shine a light on injustice, especially where people seeking sanctuary are treated unfairly and we will fight to see change happen. We adopt an attitude of service within the organisation and beyond, putting the needs of others before our own. We extend a welcome to all we meet, sharing hospitality, kindness and love, and treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their background.
