John and Fran Roberts have both been selected to fly in Gliding World Championships, senior and women's team respectively. The senior team championships will take place in Narromine Australia in December 2023, and the Women's World Championships are being held in Garray Spain July 2023.
It has been an unusual few years with Covid moving the Women's World Championships which should have been Aug 2021, to Aug 2022. Normally there is a 2 year gap between World Championships.
As the senior team worlds is taking place in Australia it is happening in the winter of 2023, rather than the summer season in 2024. There have been essentially 3 world championships taking place in a 18 month period.
The costings for each world championship are below.
We do get some funding toward entry costs and some travel/transports costs, but as you can see it's not a lot.
Some teams at the World Championships this year will be fully funded through their national association and government body. This is simply not the case for UK pilots. The costs to the pilots of representing their country whilst helping to promote gliding are significantly more than flying a normal gliding competition, as you can see from the table above.
£6000 would provide us the necessary shortfall that we need to participate in both world championships. At the moment we have £3000 in savings to help fund both competitions, with the aim of having £6000 in savings by the time we go to Australia in November.
