Hyper-local community news arrived in Moray in 2010 when Stuart Crowther became the STV Local Editor for four sites in Buckie, Elgin, Lossiemouth and Forres - all towns in Moray.
Sadly, Stuart decided to try and serve the community as a local councillor two years later - quitting STV Local as it would cause a conflict. STV then decided to simply close the local community news sites - and Stuart came second in the election. After a short spell working for his local MP and MSP (a punishment, he says, for losing), in 2013 Stuart started a new Hyper-local community news site - www.insideMoray.news - as an 'experiment'.
Three years later, insideMoray is one of the most popular community news resources in Scotland (and ranks highly in the UK), with an average of over 50,000 unique readers each month (and quite often the site has reached over 100,000). This has been achieved by producing daily, high-quality news items with a distinct slant to community interest articles - the little things that the mainstream press might ignore are sure to find favour on insideMoray.
All this has come at a cost. Stuart has never taken a 'salary' from insideMoray, and only just covers the costs of the site from the generousity of local businesses who have 'sponsored' the site, covering its basic expenses.
This has, however, always been a struggle - so Stuart is now looking for a little help from his current and future readers! Not to put too fine a point on it, Stuart is seeking some community support for 2017 - if he receives that then it will fire up insideMoray to bigger and greater things!
