III. Themes & Messages
Apricity is a short film about grief, memory, and the healing power of art. The title, meaning "the warmth of the sun in winter," symbolizes finding light in dark times. The story follows Ominis, a young man struggling to finish a song his late mother, Elizabeth, left incomplete. Her unfinished composition becomes a powerful metaphor for his unresolved grief. The film highlights the way art helps us process loss. For Ominis, completing the song isn’t just about finishing his mother’s work—it’s a way to reconnect with her, to understand her better, and to honor her memory. This theme of legacy is central, as Ominis works to bridge the gap between past and present through music.
Apricity also touches on the importance of collaboration and connection. When Lucy, a stranger, steps in to help, it shows how others can guide us through our struggles, offering new perspectives and support. Ultimately, Apricity is about finding warmth, hope, and connection even in the coldest moments of life. The film’s message is a reminder that in the face of grief, creativity and human connection can help us heal and move forward.
Kokoro: Japanese Wisdom for a Life Well-Lived by Beth Kempton serves as a key inspiration for the story. It delves into themes of grief and healing through a deep connection with our inner self and soul. The appreciation for the book’s philosophy forms the cornerstone of the underlying message in Apricity.
