Initiative for Nature Conservation Cymru

RCN 1180113, Carmarthen

We are an independent nature conservation organisation established to better hold government to account and to speak out for nature in Wales. We do not accept government or statutory funding meaning that we can challenge decision makers and take litigation action when needed. We work alongside communities partners and landowners to deliver for nature in Wales including for landscape scale species and habitat restoration and reintroductions. We are home to the all-Wales Natur Cymru magazine and the beautiful Llwyndewi Farm Nature Reserve

Since its establishment in 2018, INCC has undertaken several litigation cases and run a number of successful advocacy campaigns that have resulted in the safeguarding of protected sites and species in Wales.  As well as advocacy and litigation we are also delivering Wales’ first marsh fritillary population reinforcement. This pioneering project has helped save a population of the rare butterfly, as well as increase its long-term survival in the landscape. The success of this project has also recently led to a further license to reintroduce the butterfly to North Pembrokeshire which will take place from 2025 onwards.

Working closely with landowners and land managers is at the heart of our practical nature conservation delivery. We are proud to be working with so many different landowners across Wales and we believe that forming genuine bonds and partnerships with the people managing the land is the best way to reverse declines in biodiversity in Wales. This approach also enables INCC to undertake large conservation projects on relatively small budgets, ensuring that resources are targeted on delivery. Working together and sharing information is a core principle of INCC’s work. As well as working with individual landowners we have been active on a landscape scale in several areas of Wales. This has also led to INCC securing its first nature reserve, which covers around 60ha of land in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

In 2020, INCC were able to launch the all-Wales nature conservation magazine, Natur Cymru. The magazine invites articles from different groups and individuals across Wales so that information can be shared throughout the sector and so that we all have a platform to debate and find solutions.
