Help me keep a roof over my head!

by Riz Maslen in Saint Leonards-on-sea, England, United Kingdom

Can you help?

I live in a property that needs major work doing due to 20 years of neglect by the freeholder.

Last week, I was sent an invoice that came as a huge shock due to the amount of money the freeholder calculated is my share of the overall cost of works.  I was sent an invoice for £58000! Who has that kind of money at hand these days? I certainly don’t! Subsequent communications from the freeholder have been quite threatening. I’m trying to do what I can financially working as an Artist along with a full time job for a charity. As some of you may know, I have dedicated my life to music but it’s not an easy path. I live hand to mouth and don’t have the funds to cover this extraordinary bill. It’s simply terrifying.

This is my first home and I never thought I would ever have this opportunity to own my own home, this was made possible by some money that was left by my amazing mum who passed away from cancer in 2019! It was devastating to lose my Mum who was such a force of nature! I miss her everyday but my home is her legacy and I am thankful for that every day! I love my home! With the money I was given by my mum, I was able to put a small deposit down along with working extremely hard to secure a mortgage which was no easy feat, working two jobs to make it all possible. But here I am a home owner!

After getting some legal advice from the Leasehold Advisory Service, I put in a proposal stating what I could afford at this time as a down payment and a monthly repayment plan that I can afford on my current income. This was rejected by the freeholder! I don’t know how it’s legal for freeholders to hand out such enormous bills to leaseholders. I am sure they know, most can’t afford anywhere near that amount. I’m shaken to my core and sick with worry.

I am faced with a massive challenge! To find the money so I can continue to live in my home! I've thought long and hard about doing this, and its not something I would have normally considered! I really need your help! I know we are in tough financial times and how hard it is to survive out there! I would be grateful for anything at this stage. If you are not able to contribute financially then please share! Sharing is caring!

Thank you!
