Aim: We’re taking ‘I’m Autistic- a new musical’ to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year and we need your help!
Who are we?
Genuinely Confused Theatre Co is small British non-profit theatre company run by 3 young artists. We are dedicated to revolutionising British musical theatre by prioritising authentic representation and putting untold stories on stage. We’ve created a place where creativity meets inclusivity, and every performance is an opportunity to break new ground. This year, we are absolutely over the moon to be taking our original musical, I'm Autistic - A New Musical, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In order to do this, we need to secure enough funding to help cover the many costs that come with this project!
A New Musical?! How exciting!
You would be absolutely correct, this is incredibly exciting! ‘I’m Autistic’ is a new musical written by Leonora Brooks, a young, female autistic writer/composer: The show follows three autistic characters, Lauren, Nat and Chloe and the challenges they face navigating life as autistic people. All three characters have varying support needs and contrasting plot lines to highlight the broad range of autistic experiences. It puts autistic experiences, and autistic performers in the spotlight and aims to re-educate audiences on any pre-conceptions they have about autism. With a score reminiscent of Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress, not only will you walk away having learned something, but you will have laughed, cried and be singing along for months afterwards.
Development and Workshops
Originally starting off as Leonora’s dissertation in her 3rd year of drama school, the show has been workshopped and showcased three times in the last 2 years and is now ready to take its next step. Our most recent workshop was ‘I’m Autistic- a new musical’ In concert live at The Other Palace studio. We performed 20 songs from the show to an almost sold out audience and had some great feedback from the evening.
The most recent workshop was at Bird College in July 2024 and was an excellent opportunity to R&D the material.
The workshop culminated in a performance of a 1 hour, staged version of the show where industry professionals and friends and family were invited to watch.
So why is this important?
Our theatre company has been created by neurodiverse people, for neurodiverse people and our aim is to showcase as many neurodiverse artists as possible. We believe supporting an arts project that furthers understanding of disability is a great way to show support for the autistic community. Getting this show seen is no small task, but we know the message behind it means we cannot give up.
The long road to Fringe
Taking this show to Fringe is no small endeavour, but we feel this is the right platform to launch the show to a bigger audience, and improve audience perceptions of autism. In terms of what we need funds to cover, the list feels endless currently- however our first and most important focus is paying our artists fairly. We also need to cover the cost of our incredible musical director, venue, set, props, travel, accommodation, rehearsal space, flyers, programmes- the list goes on. So, anything you can donate will be a massive help in getting us there, even if it's just the price of a coffee. By donating to us, you’ll be ensuring our artists are paid fairly for their time and skillset which is so important, especially at Fringe.
Excited?!
So are we!!! This project is so incredibly exciting and we cannot wait for you all to see it! If you want a taster in the meantime, as a reward for supporting us with a £25 or more donation you can have exclusive access to our live at the other palace cast album! Pretty good huh?
On a serious note, all support is appreciated. We’re a small company of 3 young people who desperately want to change the narrative and are working really hard to do so. See you @ Fringe
