iiChild began life as a community group in Camberwell, South London, founded by Elaine Joseph, a concerned youth worker. Elaine saw young people wondering about the local estates with nothing to do during school holidays. A lack of out of school provision appeared to contribute towards the risk of exposure to gang-related activities. In 2010, Elaine reached out to the young people and parents with a survey to better understand their local challenges and to identify their need which were as follows:
- a safe place to meet
- somewhere for younger siblings
- meaningful activities and work placements.
By 2011, iiChild was one of a few community groups to offer a full-day holiday camp to low-income families with children and young people, serving breakfast, lunch and organising activities and outings.
In 2014, iiChild became a charity. By 2018, iiChild added a parent and toddler’s group to its portfolio to provide a social meeting point and a hot meal for parents/carers and their children. iiChild continues to look for opportunities to meet local increased demand for affordable low-cost provision for the under 5s and we think we are in a great position to develop and grow in this space.
