Writer/performer Sierra Callaghan, following their run at Gilded Balloon's Patter Hoose during Fringe 2024, returns with satirical, educational comedy show #Hysteria exploring the historical views and problems surrounding sexuality and the health system. This show is focused on the social and political issues surrounding female sexual expression and repression, as well as the racism and homophobia that has shaped acceptable male sexuality historically and up to the present day. It explores the injustices of the health system, society's views on "deviant sexuality" and the queer community.
Audience members are immersed in the role of a future duchess preparing for their wedding night with "The Duke", they are first educated by their Governess on everything they will need to know to be a good little wife (in keeping with the teachings of the church of England of course). We then meet "The Duke", a rake and rapscallion, a deviant, an Oscar Wilde (as it were), who will take the audience through the history of male sexuality, including anti-masturbation devices, homophobia, and the inherent racism of the time.
Combining scripted comedy, stand up, burlesque and audience participation this show is sure to be a raving Edinburgh success.
We believe this show is beneficial and appealing to all, however, it will especially resonate with queer communities, young women and anyone who’s ever experienced vaginismus, endometriosis, erectile dysfunction, or any confusion from the complicated feelings that arise from just having genitals.
It is likely that a young, queer, socially conscious demographic will be particularly drawn to this show. Both Ray and Sierra would definitely add #Hysteria to their favourites when seeing the title on the Fringe listings so we know the key demographics really well.
It’s also highly likely this show will benefit older audiences and help bridge the gap in difficult conversations between the generations around health, sexuality and gender.
