This short film is about a girl called Evie whose life has been chaotic since her fathers passing. Evie finds a sense of peace when controlling her eating habits. Evie, her mother Claire, and her best friend Mia all gather for dinner on the anniversary of her fathers death, Evie makes things awkward by refusing to eat much of the meal, rejecting her mothers hospitality, and showing Mia her true colours. After dinner Evie leaves abruptly so she can make herself throw up to remove the food from her body. Later in the evening Evie is confronted by her mother, which causes contention that finally leads to a confession from Evie about her problem.
Themes-
-This film explores the themes of grief and the coping mechanisms that may stem from from loss and the feeling of being abandoned because of death. We also delve into the rejection of a positive self image causing body dysmorphia and with that eating problems and its effect to relationships.
Style, Genre and Tone-
-The film will give a raw and dramatic feel. Ribs will be reminiscent of older indie films and their mixture of cool, warm aesthetically pleasing tones. The genre will feature dramatic elements to moody visuals to emotional melodramatic performances.
Locations-
-Ribs has two main locations that feature key elements of the film, a café and a house. An idea currently in progress is to use local businesses for our sets, as it promotes their business and also helps us out greatly
Cast & Crew - a percentage of funds collected from this campaign will help us pay for cast and crew expenses, allowing us to increase the quality of our overall film.
Costumes and props - It's hard to set the scene if the film doesn’t look the part. donations will allow our production designer to fully immerse the audience, and level up their design of the costume and props.
Locations - The funds we raise will help us invest in the best possible locations. Hourly rates for some locations can run high, so the extra bit of support would help us secure an excellent location.
Additional fees- Any extra fees would go towards getting an original sound track. It would also go a long way towards catering and transport, which is vital for our production.
Inspiration
Many people face an eating disorder in some capacity throughout their lives. Whether you know someone or you yourself are struggling, these complex mental health conditions affect millions worldwide. As a writer, I was drawn to this theme because of the stigmas surrounding eating disorders and became curious about their causes. The causes of eating disorders are multifaceted and can include psychological, biological, social and genetic factors. It is due to their misunderstood nature that I believe harsh stigmas including the idea that ‘eating disorders are a lifestyle choice’ or that they are ‘easy to overcome’ are brought on.
Future aspirations
The aim of this film is to delve into these aspects through a cinematic lens shaking stigmas and eliminating judgements towards people with eating disorders. Overall, promoting a culture in which individuals can seek support and treatment without shame or guilt.
It is my hope that the success of this film will allow me to write and direct more projects that can shed light on equally complex topics.
