What's the challenge?
A dedicated team from Got Your Six UK CIC are taking on the challenge of walking Hub2Hub over 3 days.
Leaving from The Veterans Hub Weymouth and Portland CIC in Dorset on Fri 27th, a core team from GYSUK will head north for circa 40 miles, taking in two nights camping en route, before reaching their destination of the GYSUK Community Hub in Wincanton, Somerset on Sun 29th June.
Segments will be set up enabling people to safely join and depart for different sections of the walk. This allows those less able to still be involved, but not commit to the entire 3 days.
A few from the core team have already begun training in different locations, as and when they're able to. With members taking part from all armed services, as well as from various counties, getting together to train has its challenges, so the walk will bring together a host of people and create long lasting connections.
So, what does Got Your Six UK do?
Well, we're celebrating one year since our community hub in Wincanton opened, so let's start there!
Firstly, our community hub is open to all!
Our lounge area is the perfect way to relax, enjoy a brew/wet, and meet people you never knew you needed in your life! The social aspect of the project brings people together from all walks of life, reduces isolation, and aids integration between the military and civilian communities.
We have a variety of groups and get togethers so there's something for everyone.
Aside from our community lounge, we have a bank vault bookshop, wellbeing garden, and are opening a pre-loved shop shortly.
Our military specific side of ops is inline with out not-for-profit status, and includes military specific therapy, peer support mentors, and access to a multitude of welfare organisations and services.
Our military specific therapy is open to both serving personnel and veterans, is trauma-informed, at the client's pace, has little-or-no waiting times, and is not time-limited. We work with regiments, and military specific charitable organisations to offset the cost of therapy.
One huge part of what we do is suicide intervention, particularly amongst those in our military community. We understand the turmoil that can lead to such thoughts and we never want to see anyone become another devastating statistic! There is always another option! Reach out!
Our hub provides drop-in clinics with a variety of people from local solicitors, to health coaches, to mortgage advisors. Increasing access to services, and enabling those who may otherwise not benefit from them.
We provide a meaningful opportunity for those who serve and have served to get together, 'spin some dits', share experiences, and bond, rekindling that sense of belonging and cameraderie.
Then there's our days out, evening socials, and quiz nights...there's not much we don't do! Which is why funding is crucial to ensure we are able to continue providing the services we do.
Any donation, no matter how small is gratefully received and put to good use. We try to keep costs to a minimum, but overheads are inevitable. Income generated through the bookshop, pre-loved shop, and sale of merchandise is ringfenced to cover as many overheads as possible so that donations can be concentrated on the services we provide, however, with the rising costs involved in running a small business, this isn't always possible. So this is where these kinds of challenges come in, to boost awareness of our work, but also to generate fundraising and sponsorship.
Thanks for taking the time to consider our project for your kind donation.
