Hospice Care Kenya Limited

RCN 1141469, Worcester

We are a registered UK charity helping to bring compassion, care and support to children and adults living and dying with a life-limiting illness in Kenya. We believe that no one should die in pain, so we work closely with local partners in Kenya to identify need, and develop and deliver quality palliative care.

Hospice Care Kenya Limited

Less than 2 in 10 people in Kenya have access to palliative care. There are no specialist services for children and only 1% of children have access to palliative care. Limited access to opioid painkillers means that many Kenyans die in pain.

We’re working with partners in Kenya to change this. Together we identify need, and develop and deliver quality palliative care. Our work provides care for children and adults living and dying from cancer and other life-limiting conditions, and helps support the whole family.

We support the cost of home visits by palliative care nurses, enabling them to care for isolated and housebound patients.

We help hospices to run support groups and day-care for patients and their families. This is an opportunity for patients to meet others and share their stories, and is an immense source of encouragement and support for many.

We train Community Health Volunteers to provide  home-based palliative care. They work as the ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground in their communities, finding help for people with symptoms and transforming life and death for terminally ill patients and their families. They also raise awareness of cancer to make sure that people get diagnosed and treated sooner.

Many health workers in Kenya have little knowledge of palliative care or pain management in palliative care patients. We train health workers to support patients and their  families, throughout the stages of their illness, with psychological and emotional support, pain management, counselling and bereavement support.

Hospices in Kenya receive no government funding so we support the start-up of new hospices and provide essential medicines and supplies.

By supporting Hospice Care Kenya to can help change the lives of people living and dying with a life-limiting illness in Kenya.
