Holmfirth & District Bowling Club (HDBC) was established at its Bridge Fold premises in 1898 as a member only organisation for people looking to undertake both social and competitive crown green bowls.
The Club has five teams in the Huddersfield Veteran’s bowling leagues as well as providing social bowling for almost 60 members.
Just less than half of the members are ladies – many of whom have significant caring responsibilities. They enjoy, and look forward to, the Thursday social days. Bowling offers them a much needed respite. Providing a fun and friendly activity and a great way to get some exercise whilst spending time with friends and making new ones. When allowed fish and chip takeaways are often ordered and lunch eaten together.
The majority of members are older, some having long-term health issues, and some are disabled so we are providing a vital service to them. The Club is a sanctuary providing social interaction for many members. The value in participation helps to get them out and about, gets them moving and physically active, enabling friendships and conversation which improves mental health. This is especially true for ageing and isolated people, carers and those with learning difficulties.
Many of our members have suffered life changing illness and we actively support elderly members, spectators and other visitors with disabilities. Our priority as a Club is to reduce barriers to involvement and accommodate more people. We have a strong commitment to continue to provide opportunities to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of people within our community – through physical and social interaction at the Club.
We are a vital and inclusive organisation and provide support in the rehabilitation of individuals after illness or strokes, who are at risk of slipping into depression, who can’t access other recreational activities and rely on the club as their link to the community. We do make a positive contribution to combatting loneliness in the community.
