Holbrooks Community Centre, located on John Shelton Drive in Coventry, serves as a pivotal hub for local residents, offering a range of services and support through its partnership with the Holbrooks Community Care Association (HCCA). Established with funds from the British War Relief Society of America after World War II, the centre stands as a testament to enduring community spirit and international friendship.
A cornerstone initiative of the centre is its Social Supermarket, designed to assist individuals and families facing financial challenges. Operating every Monday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, the supermarket offers members the opportunity to obtain up to £20 worth of groceries for just £7. Typical grocery bags may include fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats or meat substitutes, baked goods, tinned foods, and more.
To access the Social Supermarket, individuals must become members through the Household Support Fund, where they will get 3 free bags and then become a member of the Social Supermarket. Eligibility is based on receiving certain benefits such as Universal Credit, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credit, Pension Credit, Jobseekers Allowance, Housing Benefit, ESA, or having children with a HAF code.
Complementing the Social Supermarket, the Community Café operates concurrently on Mondays from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. It provides low cost freshly cooked hot meals, along with unlimited hot drinks. Meals range from jacket potatoes and soups to shepherd's pie and pasta dishes, all prepared on-site to ensure freshness. The café has earned a 5-star food rating from Coventry City Council, reflecting its commitment to high food hygiene standards.
Achievements and Community Engagement
Over the past two years, Holbrooks Community Centre and HCCA have made significant contributions to the community, including:
Providing advice and information to over 2,000 individuals.
Facilitating numerous Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programs for children.
Ensuring free access to the internet and other essential services.
The centre has also garnered media attention for its impactful work. In November 2024, BBC News featured the Social Supermarket, Community Café, and Warm Safe Space, highlighting their roles in supporting residents amid the cost-of-living crisis.
Through these initiatives, Holbrooks Community Centre continues to foster a supportive and resilient community environment, addressing both immediate needs and promoting long-term well-being.
