Nature in Scotland needs your help.

Despite our iconic native species, world-famous landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Scotland is officially classed as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Centuries of deforestation, intensive agriculture and unsustainable fishing have damaged ecosystems and pushed species to the brink of extinction.

Local communities and environmental groups are fighting back against the twin threats of biodiversity loss and climate change through projects that protect and restore nature. The movement is diverse, vibrant and growing – encompassing everything from education and advocacy to hands-on monitoring and restoration.

Significant challenges remain, but with your help we can supercharge the efforts already underway, bringing us one-step closer to a healthier, more resilient natural environment.

How do we help?

The Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation aims to support, enable, and drive grassroots work that protects and restores nature in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. We do this through pooling together donations, then awarding grants to the most impactful and innovative grassroots projects.

Since launching in 2020, we have supported over 60 projects, ranging from direct restoration work, such as temperate rainforest habitat creation, to strategic projects that drive long-term change, such as marine litter policy work.

However, we are significantly over-subscribed, receiving over twice the number of funding requests than we can support.
