Based in Hebden Bridge West Yorkshire for nearly 20 years, Heroica (formerly Square Peg Productions) travels to non-theatre spaces all over the UK with exciting new plays on the lives and work of maverick, unsung women: inspirational women of whom we believe the public should be aware.

Heroica Theatre Company is based in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and champions the lives and works of unsung, maverick women. Women overlooked in their lifetime whom we believe deserve better recognition.
We urgently need your help to raise £1500 to ensure that we can take our latest work, 'Pat Douthwaite: Alive and Kicking', to more UK venues in 2025. First performances of this exciting new one woman show, looking at the life and work of the unique and powerful artist, Pat Douthwaite, are scheduled for early September 2024 in Hebden Bridge, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Please donate if you can and spread the word by sharing this appeal with your contacts. Every penny helps us to introduce you to women unsung in their lifetime and keep investing in new writing for unusual spaces.
A small-scale, not-for-profit theatre company, Heroica has successfully toured eight theatre productions, attracting four and five-star critical ratings, introducing UK audiences to 12 new heroines, ranging from quiet Queens of the 1500s through little known philanthropists, faith leaders and suffragettes to vibrant unknown artists of the 18th – 20th centuries. The majority of our productions have been performed outdoors or in non-theatre spaces relating to the working lives of the subjects and have included activities. Rare and exciting connections happen between the heroines and the audience meeting them as these inspiring women are brought to life and given a voice.
In 2019 we launched our Maverick Monologues series, initially in local community spaces and then in 2020, during the pandemic, a rich online and international popularity was achieved. Members of the public who had never written dramatically before were writing and presenting thrilling monologues in the first person for their chosen heroines. You can read and listen to these 93 monologues on our website via www.heroicatheatrecompany.co.uk/maverick-monologues
Our belief was confirmed that people were intrigued and curious about women’s lives and could unearth, often from their own families, women who had gone woefully under-sung and now revelled in our attention. This area of work will be ongoing and we’re looking forward to launching another series over the next 12 months.
We’d like to say a huge thank to all those organisations and individuals who have already shown their generous support for our work. It’s never been harder to produce new plays and take them to unusual places and it is thanks to your generosity we have been able to raise the funds required for our productions.
We will always need your help to invest in the future of plays performing in unusual locations and featuring new writing with women’s stories at their heart. Please spread the word by donating and sharing us with your contacts to ensure that this investment in exciting new work continues and voices can be given to more Heroica heroines.
