The Grand Iftar on St Mark’s Road started in Ramadhaan 2017 and was part of the Grand opening ceremony of the Mosque where approx 6000 people joined us in breaking bread together. It was the start of a growing trend of ‘Grand Iftars’ here in Bristol and we feel very honoured to have hosted one of the first.
All of our supporters, members and volunteers are very generous with time and money but we do fall short and this year, with the pinch of the cost of living crisis, increase in fuel costs and inflation generally, we are asking for help to cover those losses.
You may wonder why we organise the Grand Iftar knowing we may encounter losses; it’s about bringing communities together, to break bread together, to talk, to bond and to better understand each other. It’s genuinely about people from so many different backgrounds simply getting along whilst sharing a meal.
Obviously this year our focus is Palestine. We could not possibly host an Iftar without it being in Solidarity with Palestine this year. Many of us are heartbroken and feeling helpless about the situation and whilst the Muslim community fast this month, our Palestinian families have been at the for front of our minds knowing that we will have a meal to end our hunger, but most of our brothers, sisters and children in Gaza won’t.
