Help Young People build brighter futures through this challenging time, we are supporting those most in need via positive outdoor activities

by Adrian Richards in Halvasso, England, United Kingdom

The Need

Covid-19 has seen a surge in domestic violence, loneliness, anxiety and feelings of isolation.

For the already-vulnerable children and young people that we support at BF Adventure through our charitable programmes, these present further challenges and are creating a potentially overwhelming demand for our services.

These young people already face some of life’s toughest challenges, including poverty, mental ill-health and other complex barriers. Now more than ever, there is an urgent need to support them; for many, home is not a safe place to be.

How We Help & Make A Difference:

BF Adventure is an outdoor education charity, based in Cornwall, with a mission to support children and young people on a journey of positive change. We give them the tools to identify and overcome their own challenges and are passionate about enabling them to overcome their barriers to education, work, social interaction and a bright future. For some of the young people, BF Adventure is the only source of education or appropriate social contact as they cannot manage oth1588189036_cf_12.jpger provisions offered. In addition, as young people gain our trust they also seek advice with us about other subjects such as domestic abuse, substance misuse and housing issues.

We normally support over 4,000 individuals a year with 500 of these considered as Vulnerable, living with multiple disadvantages including poverty and social isolation. Our team supports them to face learning and /or physical disabilities, behavioral challenges, mental ill health and other issues associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences.

This vital work is needed more than ever now and we are doing all we can to support those most in need through these challenging times and in looking to be ready to reach many more once current restrictions are relaxed.

But we have lost nearly all of our income - the large groups and private bookings that cover our costs and support our charity programmes. Without more help, this stunning accessible site which is 30 years in the making and has supported nearing 100,000 individuals to date may have to close forever.

Please help us build a resilient charity and to support more young people struggling though this challenging time and critically as we all try and transition back to the new normal once the peak of the pandemic has passed.

These are tough times for everyone but every little you can give will enable our team to make a massive difference and to make positive changes that will last a life time.

How We Work:

We support children and young people on a Journey of Change through a range of adaptable programmes that are designed to meet their needs.  We use our outdoor environment, 60 acres of heathland, woodland and flooded quarries to enable them to identify their own social, emotional and physical barriers and to choose their own challenges which will support them to overcome these.

Activities range from coasteering (Quarry based), kayaking, canoeing, archery, climbing, zip-wiring,to forest school, den-building and more. We have a team of highly skilled instructors guiding our young people and our programmes are Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTC) accredited.

Current Delivery:

BF Adventure is officially recognized as a provider of key services to young people whom are Vulnerable, have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) and/or are disabled. Many of these young people are currently in crisis and we are delivering a scaled down service from our safe and accessible outdoor site (minimising all risks associated with Covid-19 where possible). Once safe to do so we need to rapidly scale up our provision to meet a massive and growing waiting list of young people whom have not had support since this crisis began!

How Can YOU Help:

We need income to cover our overheads and to support the delivery of our services, any value of donation will make a massive and lasting impact. You can donate directly to support our work with young people, or donate a Voucher to support disadvantaged young people and their families on our activity days which support life skill development, team work and critically are a lot of FUN, creating lasting friendships and memories. This is something massively POSITIVE to look forward to for individuals and families facing incredibly tough times now.

You can also reward YOURSELF! Pay it forwards and buy a discounted voucher so that you can support our work now whilst giving your child or family the opportunity to have a fantastic day of adventure with us, hopefully this Summer (our outdoor site, activities and management are such that we are very low risk in terms of Covid-19 and we will continue to ensure any risks are kept as low as possible).

BF Adventure Activities

All funds received now will support our ongoing operations and increase our ability to step up to meet the growing needs.

Caz's Story:
Caz was referred to us by his school due to his low mood. His parents had separated and his dad was struggling with depression and caring for Caz.

Caz said he felt there was nothing good about his life and his family was under a Child in Need Plan following concerns around neglect. On his taster day, Caz barely said a word and was withdrawn but agreed to go on the zip wire. When he reached the end he had a genuine smile. He went on it repeatedly and became increasingly animated. When Caz returned a week later he was again very withdrawn. He gradually took part in teambuilding activities and by the end he was laughing, talking and making eye contact. Caz blossomed as the programme continued and he became a role model, supporting others.

We help young people on their Journey of Change, which sees them identifying their strengths and barriers, exploring ways to overcome challenges, building skills and positive relationships, developing resilience and discovering new passions.

BF Adventure Social Impact Report

Professionals, families and young people often ask us what it is that we actually do and why it works.  We ensure our team are trained to develop their skills in the following:

Youth Work

Our instructors are committed to using a youth work approach within their delivery, building professional, trusting relationships with young people to enable them to explore their values, issues and aspirations and support them to grow, learn and develop to their full potential.  Youth work is a distinct informal educative approach, focused on the strengths of young people, and rooted in the young person’s interests.

At BF Adventure we encourage young people to develop new interests by trying new things whilst developing their sense of self and their understanding of others.  This in turn helps them to recognise, value and influence their place in society.

Outdoor education and green spaces

“People who use the natural environment for physical activity at least once per week have about half the risk of poor mental health compared with those who do not do so; and each extra weekly use of the natural environment for physical activity reduces the risk of poor mental health by a further 6%.” – Mitchell, 2013

Several studies have linked the benefits of the outdoors to improved health and well-being. It is believed that contact with nature plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in brain development. Simply walking through a natural environment can reduce blood pressure as cortisol levels return to normal and stress levels are reduced. We encourage young people to appreciate the natural environment around them, from sensory journeys and pond dipping to wild swimming, coasteering and the zip wire.

Trauma Informed Child Development

“…the quality of the relationships between children and the adults in their lives, along with the children’s levels of emotional well-being, will largely determine the outcomes children realise.’ – Children’s Parliament, ‘It’s all about relationships”

Studies like this show that the main difference in promoting positive outcomes for young people who experience an Adverse Childhood Experience is building key relationships with trusted adults. We delegate a key worker to develop a relationship with each child. We ensure that our children have safe boundaries, we listen, both to their spoken needs and those which manifest through their behaviors. We engage with them through positive shared experiences and use a PLACE approach, using attunement and co-regulation to help them feel safe, modelling self-regulation and supporting them to develop this skill. This reduces impacts of toxic stress.
