WHO ARE WE

We are Cutty Sark Theatre, a brand-new new writing company based in Glasgow, co-founded by Eve Miller and Laura Milton. We are passionate about representing queer women, and telling stories rooted in the Scottish landscape which explore the un-real and supernatural.

This will be our company's Fringe debut, and so we really need your support to bring our vision to life. We truly believe that the world needs more Scottish stories, and more spooky stories about women and sisterhood. With your generosity, we can prove it.

OUR SHOW

'I See My Sister' - written and directed by Eve Miller

When sisters Mhairi and Caoimhe run away from home, Mhairi is determined to stay isolated from the world. It’s safer for her that way, and if it’s safer for her then it’s safer for them both. But in her struggle to keep her sister close, and other people out, Mhairi makes a deadly choice and risks losing Caoimhe forever. As the sisters become more entangled with the wild Scottish landscape, Mhairi’s secrets are revealed and her grasp on her sister – and reality – begins to slip. Drawing on Scottish folklore and traditional music, I See My Sister explores folk belief, trauma and the power of family ties, asking if it is possible to live a life untethered from community.

WHAT WILL WE USE THE MONEY FOR?

As a brand new company, we are entirely self-funded, and have been frantically fundraising to cover our basic costs. Our current funds are not yet enough to fully cover our venue costs, let alone any staging or advertising costs, both of which are vital to putting on an impressive and well-staged show, and finding an audience to watch it.

Your support and generosity would massively relieve the pressure on our very new company’s finances, providing us with a financial buffer for any unforeseen costs, and allowing us to focus our time and creative energy on the show rather than on finding more and more ways to fundraise. Most importantly it would allow us to advertise our show through posters and flyers - something which is vital to our success at our first Fringe, as we have no established reputation or network to provide footfall and attendance at our performances. By advertising, we can reach a far wider range of people and get the word out about our show, allowing us to create an audience and hopefully breathe life into our company.

OUR TEAM

1714064995_eve_headshot.jpgEve Miller

Co-Founder, Writer, Director, Co-Producer

Eve is a Glaswegian writer and director who is inspired by finding the submerged stories of women in folklore and history. In her time at university she has directed four full-scale adaptations of Shakespeare’s works, highlighting queer themes through changing the gender of certain characters, as well as editing the script and adding unspoken moments to provide more insight into the inner life and backstories of female characters which are so often lacking in Shakespearean texts. She has also written and directed a short play called Turn the Cloth as a part of a new writing festival, interweaving folklore, folk music, and the experience of girlhood, focussing on five girls taking part in a tradition to protect themselves from a kelpie. This will be Eve's Edinburgh Fringe debut, and she can't wait for all of the challenges and rewards that this creative endeavour will bring to her!

1714065068_milton_headshot.jpgLaura Milton

Co-Founder, Actor, Co-Producer

Laura is a Glasgow based actor and writer. Hailing from the East Coast, she is interested in Scottish mythology, female experience, and the more-than-human. She has experience in performing, street theatre, devising, writing, and directing. Previously she has worked with Dundee Rep Youth Theatre, Scottish Youth Theatre in their National Ensemble as well as on other projects, Student Theatre at Glasgow, and Catalan street theatre company CRUMA. Having performed a five-star reviewed show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2023, she is excited to take on new projects as a co-founder of Cutty Sark Theatre Company.

1714065411_emma_headshot.jpgEmma Gribbon

Actor

Emma is a Glasgow-based actor from Edinburgh. She has worked with the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Student Theatre at Glasgow, and the Glasgow University Shakespeare Society, and is particularly interested in continuing to explore the underrepresented stories of female experience and the queer community. Emma has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe before, returning after appearing in a five-star reviewed production last year, and is looking forward to this Fringe season.
