HAZELDINES
Who we are-
Hazeldines is a self-sustainable, off-grid plant- based World fusion food and coffee house, developed and managed by Megan and Julian Hazledine.
Our journey began in 2024 on our way to Prussia Cove, Cornwall, when we decided to turn our lives upside down completely and convert our Iveco daily truck into our dream.
Together, we have acquired over thirty years experience within the hospitality sector, ranging from managerial positions within Michelin restaurants, working alongside talented chefs and front of house, head barista roles, in fast-paced high-end south west bakeries, including Bristol’s Pinkmans, to hands-on experience running a south west based coffee roaster.
Research
We researched various reliable resources, which demonstrated a high demand for plant-based products. The leading market-research organization Straits Research concluded that the rapid growth of the vegan market corresponds with how our society is becoming increasingly health conscious.
As climate change awareness increases, consumers are consciously trying to make a difference in their impact on the environment through what they consume and purchase. The Vegconomist considers that one of the main reasons for customers switching to a plant-based diet is that it is more sustainable for our planet.
Plant-based food uses 40% less water and 80% less greenhouse gases than meat-based foods. Research further demonstrates that overall UK consumption of meat and meat products is at its all-time lowest. National Food Strategy reports that by 2030 we should we consuming 30 % less meat and Our World Data shows that switching to a plant-based diet would lead to a 75 % reduction in global agricultural land use.
In response to this research and based on our own experience within the hospitality industry we believe that launching a fully plant-based off-grid food truck will have a significantly positive impact on our environment and our future.
Hazeldines’ contribution to environmental welfare
Hazeldines is a plant-based off grid, self- sustainable project which uses solar renewable and eco-friendly energy to generate all the power we require to run our duel fuel Fracino espresso machine, equipment and lighting.
This enables us to produce high-end espresso coffee using off-grid sustainable energy and reducing noise pollution within the area. With this business ethos, Hazeldines also collaborates with Triple Co Roast - a triple certified micro roastery in the southwest, which works directly with South American coffee farmers, to help bring them out of poverty.
Alongside our hot beverages, we will supply Jacks Kombucha, a Gold Award winning all-natural, authentic Kombucha hand crafted between The Helford Passage and River Fal, and a selection of home-made fresh juices and smoothies. We will also offer free bottle refills of sparkling and tap water.
Our plant-based menu serves a wide range of World-fusion salad boxes, sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches, and gluten-free home-made gram flour wraps (chickpea wraps). Our sides will include freshly made hummus using Hodmedod`s British-grown chickpeas supplied by Archie Browns, and Newlyn Fermentary kimchi alongside offering a selection of plant-based bakes and treats.
All our fresh produce is supplied within the local area, supporting Cornish farmers, small businesses and start-up businesses, in turn vastly reducing our food miles and carbon footprint. Hazeldines products will be served in plant-based compostable packaging that can either be recycled or composted.
Our aim at Hazeldines is to be fully waste free, in a perfect fit with the Too Good To Go scheme (https://www.toogoodtogo.com )Available in app form , the mission of this worldwide platform is to fight food waste and create a marketplace for surplus food.
All food products that have not sold by the end of the day will either be offered at 50 % off or given to shelters around Penzance. Alongside this all of our coffee grounds will be offered to the public for their own personal use or put in our own food waste. Together with Too Good to Go, we also encourage the use of keep cups by applying a discount to every customer who brings their own keep cup or containers for food.
Our business has been designed around creating a comfortable work environment for staff ensuring functional areas for both coffee and food prep. We provide a healthy and positive workspace, and full training offering ample scope for forward-moving progression. We also plan to become a hub for community-based creative activities, including art and music.
Having worked, lived and become integrated within the Penzance community, we have seen how the area is changing and developing. The town prides itself on being a creative hub for like-mindedness and sustainability, with Surfers Against Sewage, Plastic Free Penzance and sustainable PZ—a local hub that collaborates with local businesses, groups and communities in ensuring the protection of the environment and paving a way for sustainable living.
Although Penzance now has a variety of cafés and restaurants offering vegetarian and plant-based options, we noticed a gap in the market for a fully plant-based nutritious menu offering a wide selection of fusion dishes whilst serving ethically sourced coffee within a low price range. Our menu is tailored for the wider demographic, offering a selection of GLUTEN FREE options and children`s menus.
Our aim is to encourage conscious eating through vibrant and creative food at the same time as creating a hub for creativity and music for the local community and paving a way for eco-friendly and renewable energy for the future of Cornwall and our planet.
