My name is Helen, and I am the founder of Empower Sickle Cell. As a mother of three children living with sickle cell disease (SCD), I have witnessed firsthand the relentless pain, societal stigma, and financial hardships that accompany this condition. In Ghana, approximately 2% of newborns are diagnosed with SCD each year, translating to about 15,000 infants annually.
The Daily Struggle
Sickle cell disease is more than a medical diagnosis; it’s a daily battle. The excruciating pain episodes, frequent hospital visits, and the looming threat of severe complications make leading a normal life incredibly challenging.
The Stigma and Employment Challenges
Beyond the physical pain, individuals with SCD in Ghana face significant societal stigma. Misconceptions label them as weak or cursed, leading to social ostracism. This stigma extends to the workplace, where many employers hesitate to hire or retain individuals with SCD due to concerns about their health and productivity. Consequently, many are denied employment opportunities or lose their jobs after recurrent health-related absences.
Our Mission
Empower Sickle Cell aims to raise funds to purchase 1,000 doses of Hydroxyurea, a crucial medication that can significantly reduce pain episodes and improve the quality of life for those with SCD. These medications will be distributed to individuals and families who cannot afford them, offering hope and relief.
