Hi, I’m Yasamin, and I’m raising funds to pursue an MFA in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck, University of London — a dream I’ve held onto for years.
I came to the UK as an international student and spent everything I had on my education. I studied science — a subject I was never passionate about — because I didn’t have the support or freedom to choose a creative path. Now, as a British citizen, I finally feel rooted and ready to follow what truly brings me alive: theatre.
Theatre isn’t a hobby for me. It’s the thing that makes me feel most human. In the past few years — now that I’ve had the mental space and stability — I’ve thrown myself fully into this world. I’ve taken every course I could afford, shadowed directors, worked as an assistant producer and assistant director, facilitated drama workshops, and volunteered wherever possible. I’ve been building towards this quietly, consistently, and with everything I have.
But here’s the catch: even though I funded my original Master’s degree entirely myself, I’m not eligible for a postgraduate loan for this one — simply because it’s technically my second. That’s left me in a really tough spot financially, especially as this MFA is full-time and intense.
This Master’s would give me the training, credibility, and structure I need to fully commit to directing as a professional career — something I’ve been working toward with heart and grit for a long time.
