Hayling Island Wave

RCN 1190803,

WAVE was started three years ago with the aim to support the young people on Hayling Island. WAVE secured funding to conduct research to establish what the young people needed/wanted. WAVE commissioned Y Services to carry out the research, the findings showed that mental health was the main issue faced by young people followed by bullying and drugs. The findings guided WAVE to supply mental health support which was achieved by funding Y Services to supply the support and Hayling College supplying the location. WAVE is looking for a location to supply a Cafe specifically for the young people of Hayling. This will allow them to meet up with friends in a warm and safe environment.

Prior to lockdown WAVE conducted research with the young people of Hayling Island. The findings showed the mains issues faced by young people:

1. Mental health

2. Bullying

3.Drugs

WAVE sponsored Y Services to provide Mental Health Support at Hayling College 6 weeks prior to the summer holidays 2021. Year 8 =25 attendances and year 10's 47 attendances in total 72 students required mental health support. For us to continually to fund an obviously required resource we need funding.

WAVE's project is to find a place where the young people of Hayling can meet in a safe place. This will take them away from roaming the streets and protect them from drug trafficking. West Town Public house Hayling Island has allowed young people to play pool in there pool area, WAVE's trustees have attended to make sure they are safe and legal. However the pool table is very popular with customers which limits the time the young people can play, they leave usually after two games to walk the streets This illustrates we desperately need a place where the young people can meet.
