The residents and visitors would be grateful for any contributions towards the cost of an AED to be located half-way up Haughurst Hill.

The Haughurst Hill community would like to locate a life saving automatic external defibrillator (AED) on the hill. In addition to the residents the hill is used by many visitors who walk, cycle, ride and run through the local area. The nearest AED (at the Hurst Community College) is more than five minutes away by car. If someone is having a heart-attack or is in cardiac arrest every minute counts towards improving their chance of survival and recovery.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) outline how important it is to have access to an AED:

  • Immediately starting CPR can double or quadruple survival from out of hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Defibrillation within 3–5 minutes of collapse can produce survival rates up to 50–70%.
  • Each minute of delay reduces the probability of survival by 10%.

Sadly fewer than 1 in 10 people survive cardiac arrest outside of hospital and less than 2% have an AED deployed before the ambulance arrives. We can play a part in improving that.

Even if you are not sure if someone is having a heart attack the AED can be used, it can record heart traces for paramedics and it can be ready to act if needed.

Modern AEDs are simple to use, they tell you what to do, how to use them and they don’t require any training. Over the next year we are seeking to raise £1500 to fund the purchase of the equipment and a cabinet. We’ll purchase this from the British Heart Foundation. Once installed there are very minor costs for upkeep (batteries and pads) which we’ll cover from future fund raising events.

Further information is available from the British Heart Foundation https://www.bhf.org.uk/ or NICE https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/cardiac-arrest-out-of-hospital-care/

Please note that you don't need an account (or to sign up) to make a donation. Also, if you make a donation Crowdfunder will ask you to "tip." This tip does not go to the AED funds, it goes to the Crowdfunder company. You can select a custom amount of zero tip if you want, they're already taking a small fee (around 50p for £10) from your donation.
