This is Martin Barnard – our much-loved Dad and Uncle.
For those of you who know Martin, you will be aware that he was diagnosed in 2017 with Alzheimer’s Disease.
It has been a very turbulent journey for us as a family, as we had no signs that this was going to hit us. It’s been particularly difficult for Anne, his wife of 54 years who has cared for him through the toughest of circumstances, dealing with all the emotional and physical inconsistencies and instability that this disease brings.
Sadly, Martin had to go into Hatherleigh Nursing Home last year as it just wasn’t possible to meet his needs anymore. He is very happy there, predominantly due to the most amazing staff who look after him. Martin has always been happiest when outside either walking or pottering in the garden, but, sadly, he needs constant supervision for his own safety. Consequently the Nursing Home outside space is so important. A considerable sum of money was spent last year creating a beautiful outside space but there is still a large area unfinished and the dedicated staff have great plans for the rest of the grounds. We are running the Belfast Marathon as a relay to help the staff complete this outside area for the residents to enjoy. We know how much this would mean for Martin, in particular.
You may be aware that we’re not all the most athletic of sorts (!) so this is quite an undertaking for us. Your sponsorship is more important than the amount, so please give anything that you can.
Thank you very much for your time,
Dom, Kieran, Rory, Damon and Liam
