Who we are:
Grimm & Co is a Yorkshire literacy charity with a mission to change lives, one story at a time.
What we do:
We provide exciting writing workshops to children and young people, from birth to age 18, unleashing imaginations through the joyful discovery of stories. Our creative writing workshops for ages 7+ cover lots of different types of writing, from comedy writing and stories, to poems, plays and monologues. Our family workshops for 0-6 year olds focus on sensory play, stories and language development.
- These workshops are all free to the child, and encourage their self-esteem, resilience and self-belief, raising literacy levels and building confidence.
- We target young people from disadvantaged areas, both in our school workshops and out-of-school activities, and this can have a hugely positive impact of their lives.
- We aim to build the capacity of children and young people, helping them to discover and unleash their hidden talents, building confidence and self-esteem and recognising their individual skills and potential.
Our impact:
We give children and young people a reason to write, with opportunities to see their writing transformed into playful, polished, professional productions. Young people have seen their radio plays broadcast on BBC Radio 4, songs put to music by professional musicians and performed at a festival ( and then being available on CD!), scripts filmed and transformed into a soap opera, not to mention the stories published each week from our storymaking workshops. Each school child who attends with their class will leave as a published author, holding a copy of their very own book, complete with their own excellent ending.
In the 8 years since we opened our doors on Doncaster Gate, we have reached over 29,000 children and young people across Yorkshire and beyond.
“The whole project extended F's boundaries of what is possible:- to have your work valued and read by actors; to see your words in print. That the whole production was such a positive experience for F was due to the concept sparking his imagination and the whole workshop having an ethos of respect for the value of each young person.”
“It really helped me free up and know other children’s ideas are different. We should just be ourselves.”
“Welcoming, friendly environment with so many creative opportunities”
“I’m comfortable being here, so I can share ideas all the time. I’m confident!”
“All the staff are fantastic. They have encouraged C to speak up about her ideas and have been very supportive. When she first started Grimm she loved reading and creative writing but was not very confident. Her confidence has grown hugely during her time at Grimm and Co. She has had a story published in “Illustoria ” magazine and entered writing competitions with the support of the staff. She wouldn’t have had confidence to do this without your support.”
