GRAVESEND ROWING CLUB

RCN 1167701, Gravesend

A community rowing club based on the Thames in Gravesend, providing opportunities for local people to learn to row and be part of the town's river heritage.

Gravesend Rowing Club was founded in 1878, making it the oldest club still operating in the town (by one year!), and since then has been teaching local people to row from our base on Gordon Promenade, helping them to achieve their aims, be that social rowing with others or competing at national level events. We work closely with local schools to increase access to rowing for young people, alongside our adult social and racing squads.

Based in a borough with high levels of depravation, we are keen to keep costs for participation as low as possible, so as many people as possible can get involved in rowing and be part of our town's centuries' old river heritage. We have seen an increase in interest in recent years, and are rapidly running out of both equipment and space, particularly for our juniors. Supporting us means helping us to improve the facilities we offer, upgrade and replace old equipment, improve safety, and ultimately help more people get involved in rowing at Gravesend.

We have also seen increased levels of flooding affecting the Promenade in recent years, with consequential risks of damage to our building and fleet. In addition to catering for growing interest in the sport, we are also looking to make the club fit for the future as extreme weather and flooding increases, so we can keep the rowing tradition in Gravesend going for another 100+ years.
