This project started in 2011 when the local Job Centre closed. We have since helped over 1500 clients offering help with on-line job-searching, pointers to suitable training and personal support including mock interviews. We changed the name from 'Work Club' to 'Job Café' after Covid to highlight our core welcoming and supportive atmosphere, even for those who may not be ready to apply for work - for 2 or 3 each week it is simply a warm friendly space. Each Thursday morning there are at least 2 trained Advisers and 2 others on reception and refreshments, all volunteers. We have full safeguarding and equal opportunity policies, lest anyone should imagine otherwise in a church-=based project, and welcome a wide range of clients, including recently Afghans and Ukrainians settling here.
Our main expense is our part-time Co-ordinator, who has a track record of running 'job clubs' and engages with local employers, training agencies and Job Centre Plus. Other costs include broad-band and phone connection and catering supplies; the church does not charge us for use of the room or catering supplies.
We appreciate that guiding people back into meaningful employment is not such a 'popular' good cause; but we know we have made, and can continue to make, a real difference to the lives of our clients with encouragement and competent guidance..
