To raise up to £5000 to update and replenish our school library!

by Ellie Abel in London, Greater London, United Kingdom

Ready, steady, READ! Help us to help them; we are running out of books for our young people!

Mandeville Primary is an Ofsted rated OUTSTANDING school. Our goal is to give all of our children an outstanding education, which allows each child to develop and succeed. We aim to foster a life-long love of learning and equip our children to be successful in the world.

We are very proud of our school and our wider community and have grown together to provide an amazing curriculum for all Mandeville children. We are always looking for new ways to improve and move forward and one of the key areas we always focus on is reading! We really love our library and the children enjoy their weekly opportunity to engage with a book of their choice (and level).

However, they have loved it so much that lots of the children have run out of books they haven’t read and some of the books have visited so many homes that they are in dire need of book retirement! Due to budget cuts and the many other challenges faced by state schools, we are struggling to find the money to replenish the library, and therefore, the minds of our young people. Furthermore, we do not have the financial freedom and scope which schools in affluent areas have… So, we need your help!

We are asking for donations to reach our goal of £5000 to replenish our shelves (for the next few years), provide an ever-increasing range of text types to enthuse and inspire our young learners and demonstrate that all children, from all backgrounds and walks of life, deserve the best that books can offer! Additionally, we hope to get state-of-the-art software for our library which encourages independence, helps to maintain parental engagement and, of course, promotes reading for pleasure in our school and at home!

£59.90 will buy a pack of 10 books

£145.84 will buy a pack of 16 books

£405.60 will buy a pack of 40 books

£999 will buy a pack of 200 books

£2,137 will buy a 2-year subscription to state-of-the-art software

Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In the UK the literacy rate is 99%, which means one in every hundred people struggle to read and write. 95% of all employment in the UK requires employees to be able to read, and the effect of having poor literacy skills has a negative impact on career progression and earnings. We won’t allow any child in our care to miss out on the best chances of life!

In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background. Choosing books is a delicate balance of fostering a love of reading, ensuring progression of skill and appropriate challenge, while also exposing children to the full range of genres and text types.

Please give what you can at your most generous time of day 😊
