This year Get Up Give Back, as part of the Property Entrepreneurs Community, will be completing a number of Mental & Physical challenges. ALL FUNDS RAISED will go towards supporting charities that help to SAVE LIVES.
On a personal level, I have chosen to walk 600,000 steps in 6 weeks. This is an average step count of almost 14,300 steps per day. That's A LOT for a sedentary desk-based entrepreneur and will require some changes and some grit. I have a big personal reason for doing so (beyond the obvious benefits to my own well-being!)...
In March 2024 I met up with my longest standing friend, Kelly, who I have known since I was 7 (that's 45 years!!). We have the kind of enduring friendship that means we can go years without seeing each other and still feel like we were laughing together yesterday.
We met in Manchester and went for a lovely meal out in a Chinese restaurant. You can picture the scene, two ladies completely absorbed in a big catch up on life, work, family etc in a busy restaurant on a Saturday night.
Then Kelly choked.
In seconds, this changed from 'have you caught a piece of chilli in your throat', to the horrifying realisation that this was a life or death situation. A full choke. Kelly couldn't breath or speak.
I stood up, realised that whilst I would attempt anything to save her, I had no idea what to do, so I shouted for help. Miracles DO happen! Our neighbouring diner got up, grabbed Kelly, performed the Heimlich manoeuvre 3 times and successfully dislodged the culprit - a piece of chicken.
The gentleman that helped us was a Doctor. He had just paid his bill and was about to leave the restaurant. Things may have ended very differently if this incident had happened just minutes later. Still now, I tear up to think of it.
There are many ways to save lives, and the fundraiser will support charities that educate parents and adults to be able to perform life saving actions like the Heimlich manoeuvre. It will also support the volunteers of the Air Ambulance crew.
Please give generously - and take time to get educated on life saving techniques. You never know when you might need them.
