Following a devastating fire that destroyed our pavilion we desperately need funds to get ALL SPORT back on at The Wick as soon as possible

by Ian Collier in Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, United Kingdom

We're still collecting donations

On the 7th November 2023 we'd raised £26,000 with 157 supporters in 42 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

 New stretch target

Once we understand the true extent of the work and costs - we will need to rebuild our club. Before the fire we offered a great place for our diverse membership and the local community. But we want to do more.

Read our chairman's latest statement

We want to provide the best possible changing facilities for EVERYONE to enjoy sport so we can achieve our goal of becoming the most inclusive sports club in London. We also want to create a focal point for the local community to use and enjoy.

Who are we?

We are Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club - a thriving community hub that is also home to Harlequins Amateurs Rugby Club, Bedfont Sports FC, Kingston College Football Academy and other community groups.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Overnight on 6 September, a catastrophic fire destroyed our pavilion. This left all sports teams that call The Wick their home without essential facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and toilets.

We need to raise enough money to acquire Portakabins that will provide those necessary facilities for adults, kids, men and women.

How we’ll spend the money raised

The money will be spent on getting hold of the relevant temporary buildings we need to get sport back on at The Wick. It will also be used to pay fixed costs that every sports club has to pay - which has become impossible with the main source of income gone!

Community impact

Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club has been on this site for 160 years. And along with our partners Harlequins Amateurs Rugby Club, Bedfont Sports FC, Kingston College Football Academy we have become an important part of the local community.

In 2023 HWRCC put out five adult Saturday league sides, a T20 team and two Sunday XIs. We offer junior cricket from 5-17 for boys and girls.

In 2022, HWRCC set up its U10 and U11 girls’ sides in conjunction with Heathfield Primary School. They won the 2023 West Surrey league.

We’re also developing links with local schools. PE Lead at Heathfield, James Watson, said: “HWRCC is a shining light to other clubs of what they can do to help kids in deprived communities.”

Also in 2023 Paige Goodwin became the first female to skipper a HWRCC men’s or mixed XI and we were given the Surrey Cricket Federation’s Connecting Communities award for making cricket “inclusive and welcoming” and “breaking down barriers for those who find it difficult to access the game”.

HWRCC is also home to Harlequin Amateur Rugby Club. Their youth girls’ rugby section offers teams for U12-U18s which feed through to a women's team.

Mixed rugby is played from U7s to U11s as well as several men’s senior teams and a veterans’ team.

Harlequins Amateur Rugby Club had been homeless for 20 years using various temporary locations until finding The Wick in 2020. Since then we have seen first hand the cohesion and success a clubhouse can bring to join a club together, culminating in a fantastic season in 22/23 by winning the Papa Johns Community Shield.

The pavilion was also a meeting place for local organisations including networking groups, local businesses and a practise space for up-and-coming bands.

Local schools have held prom nights at The Wick and it's a popular venue for parties, anniversaries, wakes and other private functions.
