Lets get Leicester South its first Green MP! Real change on Palestine, on the cost of living crisis and on the environment!

by Sharmen Rahman in Leicester, United Kingdom

Hi I'm Sharmen,

I am so pleased to be standing as your Green Party candidate for the general election on the 4th July.

About me:

My family and I live in Leicester south so what matters to Leicester south matters to me. And before I stepped into politics I was a live-in carer for two elderly relatives and stay at home mum for many years. I saw the world through the eyes of our children and the elderly - the most vulnerable in society. I saw how austerity hit these groups hard. With so many struggling, I took the plunge into politics a few years ago so I could put my experience into action.

Why me?

I have previously been an elected member here in Leicester South, I know the environment, I know how things work and I have a proven track record of delivery within this constituency. I have been a governor at two local schools, Sparkenhoe and Madani schools. I have also worked for a local MP so I know the issues that matter the most to people in Leicester. I know the importance of running a good constituency office. In my policy work I have pushed for real change for minoritised communities. If elected I can hit the ground running.

Why the Greens?

Like many of you I have become fed up with the two party system which increasingly look like mirror images of one another. The Greens are the only party putting hope and change on the ballot. We are the only real progressive alternative.

On Palestine:

The Greens have been steadfast in our support for human rights and international law to be upheld in Gaza. We were the first party to call for an immediate ceasefire in October. We are also the only party calling for a cultural and sporting boycott of Israel and for Israeli leaders to be held accountable. I have long been an active campaigner for Palestine and have represented across many forums, the community and many organisations. I did not arrive publicly on this issue after 7th October and neither did the Green Party. My support for Palestinian Human Rights and Human Rights as a whole has been more than two decades running - my whole adult life.

Cost of living:

The cost of living crisis and 14 years of austerity has hit communities in Leicester hard. And it is shocking that neither major party are offering any change to this. When more than 1 in 3 children in Leicester are living in poverty, the Green Party has committed to removing the cruel two child cap which would lift 490,000 children in the UK out of poverty.

We know that a Labour government is inevitable but Labour government offering Conservative politics needs to be kept in check. Which is why I am asking for you to lend me your vote. It is imperative that we elect Green MPs who will push for the change that we so desperately need.

Greens are winning here in Leicester South:

In Leicester south the Greens have grown in support. In the last local elections three Green councillors were elected, we have been polling second in recent MRP polling and we did unprecedentedly well at the PCC elections especially in Leicester South. We are the only ones that can beat the incumbent here. I have a proven track record for speaking out on behalf of Leicester South, So, friends and neighbours on July 4th give me your support so I can be your voice and continue to speak out in parliament.

With you support we will be able to fund our printing materials and other media required to run our campaign.
