The aim is to get someone elected for the people of Warrington who understands the challenges being faced, as I have experienced them myself

by Maddison Wheeldon Green Party MP Candidate in Warrington, United Kingdom

During my life, I’ve learned that trauma and abuse ultimately lead a person to a choice between two things. Either they deepen their sense of victimisation, become the abuse that hurt them. Or they choose to heal, they deepen their sense of compassion, humanity, refusing to ever be the cause of such pain.
Through the last 7 months, that has been more stark than ever. Some events and the rhetoric around them, have made me question whether compassion still exists in British society, and in western society generally.

This shook me to my absolute core.

I had to understand more, I leaned in to the discomfort, the pain, the trauma and grief. It amazed me that it is through doing so, that I have found myself inspired by the most empowering, resilient, courageous voices that restored every last bit of hope and faith in humanity. The Palestinians I have been so blessed to now call friends, Ibrahim being a very dear friend who I am committed to helping to escape, who has blown me away with his resilience, humanity, who asks more about how my children are doing, than lamenting on the misery he and his family are enduring, being positive and kind. They deserve so much better, and then so much more.

I find myself now, as a result of this traumatic and horrific 7 months that have turned the world upside down, the most authentic, determined (and thick skinned!) that I have ever been. I am driven by a vision of hope for a better future for my two daughters, their peers and all the children of the world who will have to inherit this from us - we owe it to them, and the people of Palestine, Sudan, Congo (sadly so many more attrocities) to stand tall, and lead with our values and principles of decency, morality, honesty and empathy.

This horrific situation we find ourselves in, with society crumbling around us, our young people struggling, division and hate soaring, lit a fire under me to find my voice and raise it for all those who, like me, have felt like their values and principles are underrepresented in our politics.

I would be so grateful for any and all support kindly given, and I will work tirelessly to ensure we improve the lives of all those in Warrington North.

A quote to leave you on that motivates me, almost daily:
