Who are The People’s Recovery Project:

An innovative charity that seeks to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people experiencing homelessness and addiction.

They create pathways and support for people in this situation, to access residential treatment: co-designed and co-delivered by community members (with lived experience) with the backing of an extraordinary and supportive board of trustees.

●  In 2023 alone, over 1400 people died while experiencing homelessness, and over a third of these deaths were related to drugs and alcohol.

●  Over two thirds of people who are experiencing homelessness have a drug or alcohol support need.

●  There's been an annual increase in recent years, of people dying from drug related causes in the UK.

When people are given the opportunity to access residential detox and rehab the results can be transformative. The People’s Recovery Project is inspired by real journeys made by individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction through treatment into recovery. These examples are currently the exception and our community is making recovery more achievable and sustainable.

What The People's Recovery Project do:

We know drug related deaths in the UK are increasing, and access to recovery is extremely limited for people living on the streets. Lack of accommodation and addiction are inextricably linked and without addressing both, neither will be resolved. People experiencing homelessness and addiction who identify residential treatment as a primary goal are often met with barriers, conditions and delays.

● The PRP organise drop-in spaces where individuals can attend and hear from people who've been in the same situation but have now found routes to recovery. These drop-ins function as our community hubs, providing connections and safe relationships to people entering new recovery journeys, and find shared purpose, no longer feeling alone or isolated.

● They negotiate placements into detox and rehab, removing conditions and delays, while ensuring adherence to safe working practices and clear risk management.

● There is also a robust evaluation of data to prove the efficacy of their work, using an EIF grant undertaking a retrospective cost based analysis of TPRP community members who are now living in sustained recovery - looking at their use of public resources and health and wellbeing prior to receiving treatment for their addiction.

How will fundraising help them:

The PRP are a new charity, and have made a significant investment in us runners for the Hackney Half Marathon. All funds raised will first recoup that investment, and the 'profits' go straight to their work; maintaining and expanding the drop-in hubs and negotiating accessible rehab placements and accommodation, creating pathways to recovery.

What it will mean to me that you'll donate:

Several close friend's of mine have struggled with addiction issues in the past decade, and thankfully through the support of people around them and having a roof (or a friend's roof) above their heads, they've been able to get those issues behind them. However, any of us could find ourselves in the situation the people the PRP are helping back on their feet.

I've also wanted to engage with a charity working with homelessness for some time, and the PRP is a perfect and necessary combination, centring on the circle of addiction preventing people from getting out of homelessness, and homelessness disabling their recovery from addiction.

Being fortunate enough to be able to run and put myself through a little pain, having time and resources to raise funds for the PRP to continue progressing and developing as a vital charity, is the least I can offer to help them, and would mean the world to me if you're able to sponsor.

If you're in a position to give, it'll massively increase the brilliant work The People's Recovery Project are already doing, and make my running 22km all the more worthwhile.
