Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios (GAMIS) are a new organisation committed to supporting experimental and community-focused film programming in Govanhill. Our vision is to develop dedicated screening facilities, workspaces and professional support for artists working in moving image and other time-based practices. Our ultimate goal is to create a space that is used and loved by all parts of our local community, using film to share stories about ourselves with each other.

Glasgow Artists' Moving Image Studios SCIO

We have been programming cinema and supporting artists and filmmakers in Govanhill and wider Glasgow since 2018. We started with the ambition of reopening the historic Govanhill Picture House, and during the Covid lockdowns we built a temporary outdoor cinema next door.

We run cinema screenings, workshops, and festival events, as well as supporting artists and community groups to develop their own creative projects locally and internationally.

We are now fundraising to support the development of new premises at the former Phoenix Furniture warehouse on Niddrie Road. We were lucky enough to be able to use it under temporary licence in August 2022 for the Govanhill Festival, and later in November for collaborative programmes with CinemaAttic, Invisible Women and Anna Tudos.

The space is excellent, but still needs a lot of work to make it comfortable and accessible for our community. We're currently fundraising to be able to carry out essential works to repair the heating, install new doors and toilets and generally give the place a bit of a spruce up. We will also be be making gradual improvements to our cinema equipment and seating banks to make the movie-going experience even more enjoyable for our local community in Govanhill.
