The Cause
The Trevor Howell Day Unit is the ward within St George's Hospital (Registered Charity No. 1171195) that delivers systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) to patients with different types of cancer, these treatments include chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The nurses are absolutely brilliant but are battling with challenges in funding to fix some key pieces of equipment that patients rely on to make their time in the hospital more bearable.
The three key things we are fundraising for include:
1. Fixing one of two scalp-cooling machines available within the ward. These machines help prevent hair-loss during some chemotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, the screen is broken on one of these machines making it unusable and is going to be very expensive to fix. This is leading to increased wait times and stress for patients who may already be in hospital for long periods of time.
2. Fixing electronic chairs that allow patients to raise their legs and recline during treatment. These are particularly comforting and allow patients to rest during longer periods of treatment. Some of the motors have broken and are again very expensive to fix. Unfortunately, budgets are not always available for very expensive equipment to be fixed and the patient need is there right now. Broken equipment also makes the lives of the brilliant nurses harder, who are doing their best to care for patients.
3. Macmillan nurses are another completely essential part of the cancer journey for patients, an individual assigned to you from the point of diagnosis - an invaluable first port of call when you are scared or confused about something during your treatment - with you every step of the way.
