Help to fund Heallreaf 5 - a biannual UK touring exhibition which showcases the art of modern tapestry weaving.

We're still collecting donations

On the 7th April 2024 we'd raised £2,411 with 49 supporters in 69 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

Heallreaf 5 - can you help to make it happen?

Heallreaf was originally planned to be a one off tapestry exhibition in 2015, but here we are, with Heallreaf 5 plans in place, venues booked, weavers preparing to submit their work for the jurors to consider - but a lack of funding to support it and enable it to happen as planned. Margaret, the founder and key organiser of Heallreaf, has applied several times over the last year for Arts Council funding, but it has been refused each time. This has been the main source of funding for Heallreaf exhibitions in the past, but, sadly, it looks like it's not going to happen for Heallreaf 5.

Time is now running out - submissions for the exhibition are due by the start of March and the first venue is booked for June.

Excitingly, this year we hope to have a set of tapestries woven by the late Sylvia Heyden showing as part of Heallreaf 5. A chance to see some of her work in the UK - but it can't happen unless Heallreaf 5 happens!

For Heallreaf 5 to take place as envisioned, and for the art of modern tapestry to be shared to as wide an audience as possible, we urgently need your support!

Can you donate something, anything, to help Heallreaf 5 take place?

We have already been looking at ways to do things more cheaply and efficiently, including a reduction in the number of venues it will be held at. But running any exhibition incurs multiple direct and incidental costs - costs which are often absorbed by the volunteers doing the hard work in the background.

Your money will contribute to:

  • the cost of venues, where galleries are charging for space;
  • publicity and marketing, including on social media, so that we get plenty of visitors and can showcase the work of the tapestry weavers involved;
  • costs of exhibition preview events;
  • packaging and transport of the tapestries between venues;
  • travel and accommodation expenses for those helping to hang and take down work at each venue;
  • fees for jurors and the curator, previously agreed when we thought we would get external funding;
  • up front costs of producing the catalogue, including photography, printing and design;
  • all those additional incidental costs that go with running an exhibition, including insurance;
  • and, if we get enough money, a contribution to the costs of returning the tapestries to the artists at the end of the run, assuming they haven't sold first!

And, in case you wondered, 'we' are a small team of volunteers helping Margaret behind the scenes. We all do what we can, such as setting up crowdfunding pages (!), but sometimes it simply comes down to money...

Planned venues for Heallreaf 5 - 2024 into 2025:

  • 29th June 2024 to 29th August 2024 - Weston Park, Shropshire
  • [September 2024 - Oxmarket Contemporary - Chichester. tbc (funds required)]
  • 10th - 20th December 2024 - The Morley Gallery - London. Sufficient funding achieved!
  • 8th January 2025 to 6th March 2025 - Farfield Mill, Cumbria.

So, how can you help? There are a number of ways:

Pre-order Heallreaf 5 catalogue

Your pledge is a pre-order for one copy of the Heallreaf 5 catalogue. As well as generating funds 'up front' for production of the catalogues, your pledge covers the cost of postage and packing to enable us to send the catalogue to you once printed, and a small donation to Heallreaf 5 funds. Catalogues will be ready for the first venue in June, and will be sent to those who have pre-ordered as soon as they are available.
