The Cause
My name is Marie and I am a first year PhD student in Science and Religion at the University of Edinburgh. From a young age, I have been fascinated by religion. As I was not raised religiously, I was unfamiliar with the different rituals and beliefs of my friends around me. When I went to university, I decided to study religious studies to learn about religion around the world. After the first lecture, I was completely hooked and could not think of anything else I would dedicate my life to with as much passion as the study of religion.
I want to share my passion with as many people as possible so I decided to start a prize draw to help me fund my PhD and share the unique experience of this festival with the lucky winner of this prize draw. Aside from being a cultural festival, the whole city turns into a weekend-long party for those who enjoy dancing and drinking.
I have been fortunate enough to have been offered a spot at the prestigious University of Edinburgh as a PhD candidate. The University of Edinburgh is one of the few institutions in Europe with a dedicated focus on Science and Religion and has helped develop the field for decades with the Gunning lectures and Gifford lectures, which promote the research of science and religion, going back to the 19th century. Last year I was able to complete the MSc Science and Religion with distinction which helped me build the foundation that my PhD stands on. This university is ranked in the top 20 universities worldwide, with the School of Divinity ranking 5th in the UK. The university is home to world-leading researchers and cutting-edge research. To be offered a place at a university as prestigious as the University of Edinburgh is an honor and it would be a shame to have to pass on this opportunity due to insufficient funds.
