FRIENDS OF SHOREHAM FORT

The Friends of Shoreham Fort is a small charity, run entirely by volunteers, that is dedicated to the maintenance and conservation of Shoreham Fort, a Victorian fortification in Shoreham, West Sussex.

Built against the threat of invasion from Napoleon III, Bonaparte's nephew, in 1857 Shoreham Fort is the last fort of its kind to have a Carnot wall and caponier system of defence.

Shoreham Fort's history is unique and diverse... We are connected to the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854 but the fort doesn't just have a military background, it was also used as a film studio by the Grandfather of the great British Actor, Nicholas Lyndhurst.

We, as volunteers, value the site and the history it holds and want to help preserve that for future generations.  Historical sites need protecting and their stories shared and with our Chairman dedicating 28 years, to researching Shoreham Fort and its surrounds, I think it shows the sheer level of dedication involved.

The long term objective for the charity is the rebuilding of the Barrack Block, which was demolished in 1958 - deemed cheaper to remove than maintain.  This will increase the site's use and accessibility for the community and will also provide the perfect venue for the huge, and ever growing, archive that the Friends of Shoreham Fort hold.  It will become a multipurpose community asset and fantastic resource centre, which will be open to all.

Unfortunately Covid has decimated the charity's outreach programme but we are slowly rebuilding this and intend to continue to do so.  We engage with schools, community groups, military organisations and many more, sharing our knowledge and passion.
