My name is Leona Campbell, I am a Community Arts and Crafts facilitator and would love to offer the elderly, disabled and children, free arts and crafts sessions.
A bit about me!
I have lived in Cornwall for eight years and relocating here meant leaving my friends and family in London. My Grandfather was one of the people I missed most and not long after the move, he developed Alzheimers. My biggest regret was not being able to spend quality time with him during his last days. He was truly loved by everyone within the community.
Then late last year, I lost my dearest Aunt to a sudden heart attack. She was just 66 years old. She was my biggest champion, always pushing me to try to achieve greatness. But more than anything, she wanted me to be happy. She was a community giant! Riding around in her mobility scooter and engaging with strangers was her biggest joy.
Two community giants whose shoes I may never fill, but in their honor, I want to bring just a small glint of sunshine into the lives of my community. If I can emulate the impact that my Grandfather and Aunt have had on the community by doing what I love, I will truly attain happiness.
What I want to do and how
I would like to work with various organisations, such as care homes, community groups and schools with participants that are interested in being creative, whether it's painting, crafts or just simply coloring. I want to provide all materials free of charge including things like splash mats and aprons. I want each participant to be able to take away a keepsake that they have taken the time to decorate. For example, a canvas bag, coaster, T shirt, mask. So that at the end of the day, they can remind themselves that they have achieved something.
The long-term goal is to set up a Community Invested Company aimed at hosting arts and crafts workshops in various facilities, which would enable me to ensure the workshops remain free. In order for that to happen, I need to prove that I am providing a service that the community wants and needs.
I have a BA (Hons) Art and Design, am fully DBS checked and have also facilitated paid workshops for an organisation.
How are things going with the project so far?
I currently have a primary and secondary school, a care home and youth group (that work with learning and physical disabilities) that are happy for me to provide this service. With the demand comes the need for the replenishment of materials, so that I can effectively deliver this service.
Any funds received would go to replenishing materials and travel costs.
