Aim: We need help to take 'Flughafen', an original South African play with an all South African cast, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
So! ‘Flughafen’, an original South African play with a completely South African cast and South African producer and director got into the Edinburgh Fringe Festival! Yay! Unfortunately we earn completely South African currency too.
It would be an honour to bring 'Flughafen' to an international stage like the Edinburgh Fringe. It would also be all of our international debuts and would be an amazing step forward for local South African theatre. Fewer than 20 original South African plays written by women have been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in its 78-year history - highlighting how rare and important this production is for the cast and crew, as well as the local theatre scene in South Africa. I also feel that, beyond ourselves, the story is an important one to tell as it deals with difficult and important topics that aren't discussed enough, such as gender-based violence, mental health disorders, grief and substance abuse, in a sensitive and direct manner.
Mine, and my cast's commitment to delivering a professional, high-quality performance is unwavering, and we always focus on creating a memorable, impactful experience. We also love connecting with new people and would love to contribute to the vibrant festival community.
In the eerie confines of an airport terminal, five strangers become ensnared in the grip of a violent storm, severing all connections to the outside world. While the tempest rages, reality is distorted within the terminal as the passengers begin unwittingly to repeat their actions and words with eerie precision. Only Lucy, a psychologically troubled woman, seems to notice the time-loop pulling at the other passengers like marionettes. Unsure of whether or not this phenomenon is a product of her own fractured brain’s design, Lucy must face the demons of her past if she ever hopes to escape.
Captain, my captain! Our director Alice Viskat, is a director, writer, choreographer, performing artist and stand-up comic living in Cape Town. She has performed stand-up comedy in London, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam, but this will be the international directorial debut. She wrote 'Flughafen' after her own gruelling experience in an airport.
The rest of the cast include Melissa Pretorius, Lee van der Merwe, Jack Paine and Sean Black, some of Cape Town's most talented performers on stage and film.
“Flughafen” debuted in 2023 to glittering reviews, with an incredible overall rating of 4.8 stars. Amongst the many reviews, people had this to say:
