The final phase in "Restoring the Glory" of Keswick's wonderful cinema.

by Carol Rennie in Keswick, England, United Kingdom

The Keswick Alhambra is a little gem of cinema heritage: one of very few UK picture houses to have remained in continuous operation for over 100 years, with many original features and fittings still intact. We are completely independent, family-owned and operated: read more about our history on our website.

In 2019, through the generosity of friends such as you, we were able to restore the glory of our auditorium. We've used the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns to install a second screen in place of the kiosk, opening up the entrance to create a beautiful new bar and circulation area.

Our hugely supportive community of locals and regular visitors have already contributed over £10,000 to help us restore our beautiful facade - the final piece of the picture.

It cost us around £20,000 to repoint and clean the iconic red brick frontage with traditional limestone mortar, restore the beautiful round stained-glass windows, and reinstate the ground floor sash windows, previously blocked up and hidden behind movie-poster advertising quads. Now the beautiful warm light from the revamped foyer can spill out into the glistening streets of a damp Keswick night, enticing you all in!

If you want to add to that hugely generous amount we've already been given, we'd be most grateful for your donation.

For more information, or if you want to make a significant donation (over £100, say), and have your name inscribed on our wall of supporters, or discuss other arrangements we might make for you in return for your donation, please contact us directly: call Carol on 07941571064 or email [email protected]

We are extremely fortunate to have been looked after by various government schemes, including the Culture Recovery Fund for Independent Cinemas, which has helped keep the business afloat during these extended periods of coronavirus-related closure. In order to secure us a personal income, Alan has bowed out of running the Alhambra, and taken on another job. We are able to afford the second screen and foyer renovation due to being joined in the business by a second family - Jonathan Moore and Graham King, of Braithwaite. We'll be much more resilient as a two-family and two-screen enterprise! Jonathan and Carol will be the primary managers of the business going forward - with Tom always there helping out.

Thank you so much for your contributions that have helped us out in this final phase of fully restoring (perhaps even surpassing?!) the former glory of our wonderful old cinema.
