Project aim

Acclaimed film-maker and choreographer Lisa May Thomas is putting the finishing touches to her brand new film project The Touch Diaries. You can help! The work will premiere at ICIA, University of Bath on 9th July 2015 and we need just £3,000 to transform the final stage of production and make a film of the highest possible quality.

“One of the most interesting choreographers currently working in the UK. Lisa May Thomas is full of ideas, completely without guile and utterly unstoppable.”   Cheryl Pierce, ICIA, University of Bath

“…  a great measure of integrity… Thomas makes use of poetic documentary form, interweaving the minimalism of formalized movement content within a larger framework…”   Chirstinn Whyte, International Journal of Screendance

About the Touch Diaries

The Touch Diaries is a brand new dance film that combines movement, sound and real-life stories to explore touch and human connection across the generations. Through public workshops, interviews and diary-studies, Lisa and her team have been undertaking a detailed study of touch – how often, how long, with whom, what quality – in the digital age.

Isolation and loneliness are increasingly prevalent, not only for older people but also for younger generations. We are super connected yet real-life communities are fragmenting as socialising and socialisation takes place more and more online. The Touch Dairies research, carried out over the course of nine months, has formed the basis of the film which is currently being shot on location in “wilderness” spaces in Bristol including a deserted mansion house, an office, a derelict basement, a wasteland and an out-of-this world sublime space.

And this is where you come in!

We have already raised over £50,000 towards the project from Arts Council England; ICIA, University of Bath; Theatre Bristol and Activate, Dorset and have had incredible support from the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis and Dance in Devon.

We are, however, working on a very tight budget and we need help to be able to finish the film to the highest quality, acknowledge the participants and distribute widely. The finishing touches are :

  • An extra week of post-production with Adam Laity and Black Cat Films and further access to post-production facilities.
  • Live accompaniment during rehearsals and at the world premiere by cellist Matt Webb.
  • Production of DVDs to distribute to national and international film festivals.
  • Support for Lisa May Thomas to travel with her film and give talks/workshops at these events.
  • Support for community-based screenings of the film.
  • Support for the team to come together again in the Autumn for live screenings in Bristol and London.

We will be enormously grateful for your contributions and hope to connect with you at the world premiere of The Touch Diaries at ICIA, University of Bath on Thursday 9th July.
