Farnham Assist

RCN 1135187, Farnham

We currently support 200 older people in Farnham by providing social activities and events to those living alone.

Farnham Assist is a local Christian charity based within Farnham. Our charitable objects are: - “The relief of older people who are in need in the Farnham area, particularly those who live alone or are housebound. By providing assistance, information, training, advice, befriending and physical support, through which the charity shows God’s love for them.”

Our charity particularly focuses on supporting our older and most vulnerable in our community, particularly those experiencing social isolation, loneliness, and poor mental health. We have been operating as a standalone charity and business since 2010 and registered with both the Charity Commission (1135187) and Companies House (07114978). The charity currently has three part-time staff and 70 volunteers.

We currently arrange the following regular activities: -

  • Pie & Pint – A weekly event where older men gather over a pub lunch in different venues around Farnham. This usually has around 10 to 15 people each week.
  • Ladies Lunch – A monthly event where older women gather for a meal and company at a pub outside of Farnham. This usually has between 25 and 35 people each month.
  • Knit & Natter – A weekly activity where older people can come together for coffee and chat (knitting is optional) – This currently has 16 people which is our maximum capacity.
  • A befriending service for those that are housebound or may be particularly vulnerable. This is where we have trained volunteers that visit homes or phone clients on a regular basis (usually weekly) – we have around 5 to 10 clients at any time.
  • Community Lunches – Monthly community roast lunches where older people can gather for a roast Saturday lunch (in Hale) or Sunday lunch (in Central Farnham). These have around 20 clients at Hale and around 60 clients at the Central Lunch.
  • A programme of outings such as a trip to the seaside, Chichester, a horse sanctuary, garden centres and to a museum followed by vineyard tasting.
  • One off events such as history talks, afternoon teas at a local school and quizzes.
  • Informal Church services at festivals such as a Christmas Carol Service, Easter or the International Day for Older People.
